West High Choirs
Each of the three unique choirs at West High provides opportunities for students to explore music through a wide variety of styles and cultures: pop, classical, jazz, musical theatre, gospel, and folk. We present four major concerts and two solo concerts throughout the year.
Concert Choir is a non-auditioned beginning/intermediate choir open to ALL students in grades 9-12.
Students focus mainly on SAB/SATB literature from all periods of music. They develop advanced vocal and musicianship skills, as well as sight-reading and history training. Concert Choir performs at all school concerts, competitions, local festivals, and annual tours.
Aria is an auditioned advanced women's choir for grades 9-12.
Students focus on SSA/SSAA literature from all periods of music. They develop advanced vocal and musicianship skills, as well as sight-reading and history training. Aria performs at all school concerts, competitions, local festivals, and annual tours.
Aristocracy is an auditioned advanced mixed choir for grades 9-12.
Students are expected to be the top musicians at West while continuing to develop advanced vocal and musicianship skills. Students study and perform advanced literature for mixed ensembles, with an emphasis on chamber choir music from all periods of history. Aristocracy performs at all school concerts, competitions, SCVA honor choir, local festivals, community events, annual tours, and school events.
Extracurricular Singing Groups
NOTE: West High Choirs membership is a prerequisite for participation in any of the ensembles listed below.
The two barbershop quartets are auditioned treble and bass ensembles for West High Choirs singers.
Singers focus on a cappella barbershop music and performance techniques. Barbershop quartets perform at all school concerts. Singers also gain opportunities to participate in barbershop events such as Young Women in Harmony Diva Day and the SCVA Close Harmony Festival.
Polyphonies is an auditioned mixed choir for West High Choirs singers.
Singers study and perform jazz music including complex harmonies, syncopated rhythms, and improvisation. Polyphonies performs at all school concerts.
